What is the 30 Mile Meal?
The 30 Mile Meal is a locavore branding initiative that unites growers, producers, servers, and sellers under one exclusive identity in order to signal and promote truly local food. Any food business can participate, so long as it makes or uses food or ingredients from within 30 miles of Perry County.
Perry County: Where Agriculture is #1
Perry County is excited to be a part of the 30 Mile Meal brand to celebrate the farms, markets, restaurants and events that celebrate local food in our villages and townships. It is a beautiful place to live, work, play and visit throughout any season of the year. Agriculture is the #1 industry in Perry County. We have a rich cultural heritage of independent local farms, strong youth participation in 4H, and the Perry County Fair & livestock sale. The Perry County Farmer’s Market’s Co-operative was launched in 2008 on the public square of Somerset. The farmer market continues to expand with new vendors each year. Whether shopping at local stores, visiting the Perry County Farmer Market, or patronizing our local restaurants, both locals and visitors can find a growing selection of bakery items, fresh produce, meats and local specialty foods.
We have restaurant owners and stores committed to sourcing local products and produce. We have established family farmers raising livestock and all kinds of vegetable crops, as well as greenhouse operators, community gardeners, and new community supported agriculture subscription options. Preserving our heritage, food-ways and family farms will keep agricultural production as the # 1 sector in our county. There is still room to expand and innovate, as the 30 Mile Meal brand program assists local customers find local food throughout the area, patronize our food festivals and farm markets and attract tourism visitation to enjoy a unique Perry County experience. The 30 Mile Meal brand program is the perfect way to spread the local food story happening all over Perry County.
